The Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu had his best racing result (eighth place) at the Canadian GP. With that said, I’m going to move Guanyu into the spotlight and untwine five interesting facts about the driver with a newfound swagger.

  • He strongly admired Fernando Alonso

As mentioned in the video above, he really admired the F1 veteran Fernando Alonso. Interestingly, Guanyu edged out his childhood hero in the Canadian GP by one place.

  • He was a succesful F2 driver

It would be an understatement to say the first Chinese F1 driver proved himself at the F2 level. He competed in the FIA Formula 2 Championship and finished third.

  • He was very good at karting

Similar to basically every F1 driver, he discovered a strong passion for racing at a young age. In 2013 – he won the Super 1 National Rotax Max Junior Championship and Rotax Max Euro Challenge. He also made an appearance at the Karting World Championship.

  • He is the first Chinese F1 driver

It’s quite impressive that Zhou is the first F1 driver from his country – which has a population of 1.4 billion people. It’s clear that he certainly made a lot of people from his country proud – as he also blatantly is a universal inspiration.

  • He was a test driver for Renault

Besides having a spectacular F2 outing in 2020 (1 win and 6 podiums), the Chinese driver had his first taste of F1 as a test driver for the Renault DP World F1 team in the same year.
